What a phony! The woman had been nothing more than a bogus fake! She’d only been pretending to be her friend. Jo wanted to snatch her bald, but her mother would roll over in her grave if ever she really did such a thing—not to mention Papa being aghast and the others’ reactions.

Later that day, while the old folks went to see what blocks of land might be available close to town, she found Keegan and Lex sitting in the shade of a willow not too far from where the wagons had been parked.

The pair watched the goats fill their bellies, browsing nut pine and sagebrush with a bit of buffalo grass mixed in here and there.

“Well! Did you enjoy yourself?” She knew she sounded a bit haughty and perhaps demanding, but . . . he had been kissed for all to see!

“Exactly what are we talking about, Jolene?”

“I believe that you know exactly what I’m talking about! Who else would I be referring to other than the widow and that blatant public display of affection? So did you enjoy it?”

His lips puffed out a bit, marring his handsome face. “I don’t know. I’ve had worse.”

“Oh, I see. So, you’ve been kissing a lot of loose women then. How many, exactly, have there been in all?”

He grinned before licking his bottom lip as though tasting that horrible Brigette all over again. He stood. “Is this counting kin?”

“No, of course not! Kin doesn’t count.”

“Two then.”

“Oh.” Well. So that wasn’t so bad, not nearly as many as she suspected. Only two actually reassured her greatly, but . . . “Does that include Brigette?”

“Yes, ma’am.” He held up two fingers. “So it’s my turn, I’m getting way behind.”

“You and your stupid game! Why can’t you just tell me what I need to know?”

“Need?” He laughed. His red brows hiked up, and his eyes twinkled. “Why would such information be needed?”

Oh! Why had she used that stupid word?

“It isn’t. Not at all! Allow me to rephrase . . . Why can’t you just tell me what I’d like to know to satisfy my curiosity. That’s all it is. I am just curious. It’s in my nature.”

He laughed again, but she didn’t think it was the least bit funny! “You know, the Bible says, ‘out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.’ ”

“I already admitted to misspeaking, Keegan Graham. Why do you have to be so infuriating? I told you! I’m only curious.”

“You’re flat out lying, Jolene Mae! And you know it.”

Her cheeks burned hot. She professed to be a guardian of the truth . . . and . . . if she was honest with herself, with him . . . yes. She’d just borne false witness on her own self. “Fine. Forgive me. That wasn’t exactly the whole truth. It’s more than just being curious. Who else have you kissed?”

The man stepped a bit too close, swallowed her air to where she could hardly get a good breath. “Fiona McKinney. You might as well include my cousin, Lesia Graham, but she had buck teeth.
